The Kodiak Crab Festival in Kodiak, Alaska, has been running for over 50 years on Memorial Day weekend as a five-day celebration of spring that's full of fun and frivolity. Sponsored by the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce, the festival features a variety of attractions throughout the weekend including a parade, an arts and craft market and live music.

    ST. Herman Pilgrimage
Each year on August 7, 8 and 9, hundreds of people travel to Kodiak to honor the life and canonization of St. Herman of the Russian Orthodox Church by making a pilgrimage to his home on Spruce Island. Special services are held at the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Cathedral in town as well as at Monk’s Lagoon on Spruce Island. For more information visit www.sthermanseminary.org.

    Warm August Nights
Music fills the night air at the Kodiak Fair Grounds during this annual event. Local bands and special guests appear while you sit back in your lounge chair. Bonfires, dancing, food vendors. Bring your own canned beverages, enjoy live music outdoors. Transportation to and from town is provided so every person has their own designated driver. For more information call 907-539-2010.

    Kodiak ECO Challenge
Athletic enthusiasts will be disappointed to know the annual “race against the rock” has been cancelled this year. For 12 years the Eco Challenge pinned teams of four against Kodiak’s terrain in a day-long race that often included biking, hiking, running, rafting and navigating.

    Kodiak Rodeo and State Fair
Sure, you’ll find all the makings of a great state fair here, including contests (don’t miss the delicious baking contest) and games that make for family fun. But the rodeo is definitely a highlight: it’s a taste of the Wild West, Alaska-style, complete with bull riding and a horse show. You’ll also see one of the oddest small-town contests anywhere: a cow-milking contest, where audience members are invited to chase down small cows and milk them.
